Comparing price? Its a fact. Only a small percent of the worlds leather is of high enough quality to earn the grade "Top Grain Aniline". The original Charles Eames Chair used it and so does the Kardiel reproduction. Like the original, the Kardiel chair has a natural rich luster.

Shopping Tip:

What it means when others indicate “100% Italian Leather.”

When the specifications of the furniture in question state that it is made with 100% leather or 100% Italian Leather but it does not state 100% Top Grain Aniline Leather then it is made using 100% Corrected Grain Leather. Most, if not all reproductions in the mid price range are upholstered with Corrected Grain Leather. Corrected Grain is technically a form of leather that has a layer of polyurethane applied to the surface, which is then stamped or embossed using a synthetic plastic print roller to have the appearance of leather. By law, In the U.K and Australia corrected grain can no longer be sold as 100% leather. When that embossed polyurethane top layer wears through, your option is new furniture or a complete re-upholstery job.

100% Top Grain Aniline Italian Leather

One of Kardiel’s quality differences

Aniline dyed leather comes with various names depending on the manufacturer or the furniture company. You may come across names like premium aniline, naked aniline, aniline top grain, or true aniline, they’re all the same. Aniline is leather that has been dyed all the way through. It has no artificial top layer of anything applied. It is soft, pliable with a texture that caresses the hand as it runs over its surface. The porous nature of aniline leather allows it to breathe which in turn makes it that much more comfortable and durable. Aniline is genuine leather and patinas over time versus cracking and wearing out.

The Eames lounge chair and ottoman was introduced by Charles and Ray (Kaiser) Eames in 1956. A numeric name was assigned to the piece, that being the 670 for the lounge and the 671 for the ottoman. The lounge chair set enjoyed its first wide scale public appearance that same year on the TV set of the Arlene Francis’ ‘Home Show’ that later became known as the “Today Show” that is in broadcast to this day. There have been numerous TV and movie appearances for the chair since. It appeared in Chandler and Joey’s apartment in the first airing of Friends. In 2010 it appeared in Iron Man in Tony Starks apartment. In 2011 the chair was seen in the white aniline leather on the Hampton based TV show Royal Pains and the 2011 big screen hit Tron. The Eames Lounge Chair appeals to people for a variety of reasons. It is a classic design that has been in production continuously since its inception. In addition to the style, it is also very comfortable, a combination not always found in high design furniture pieces. chair with Ottoman retail for around $4,200 or more in the US, depending on the selection of veneer. In Europe, Full Grain Aniline Leather versions are considerably more expensive (around $9,000 for the classic Palisander/ black leather version). In part the appeal of the chair comes from its comfort. The Eames focused first on usability in their designs and the Eames Lounge Chair (670) and (671) Ottoman are no exception to this rule. Examples of the original Eames Lounge are on display in New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
Charles Eames, an American architect and designer was greatly influenced by the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. Eliel’s son Eero (creator of the Ball Chair) would later become a partner and friend of Charles. In 1941, Charles married Ray Kaiser also an American artist, designer, and filmmaker who, together with her husband Charles, is responsible for many classic, iconic designs of the 20th century. Their work displayed the new technique of molded plywood products, including the 1945 DCW (Dining Chair Wood) and DCM (Dining Chair Metal with plywood seat) and the plywood Eames Lounge Chair 1956. From the beginning, the Eames furniture has usually been listed as by Charles Eames. In fact in the 1948 and 1952 Herman Miller bound catalogs, only Charles’ name is listed, but it has become clear that Ray was deeply involved and should be considered at minimum an equal partner in bringing the classic furniture pieces to life.
