You can read more about the interesting story and production delay of the LCW as the US entered into World War II under the “description” tab above.

The Plywood Lounge Chair with Wood Legs is not the Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair by Herman Miller®. Kardiel is in no way affiliated with Herman Miller®.

The original chair was designed using technology for molding plywood that the Eames developed before world war II. Charles and his friend, designer of the Womb Chair, Eero Saarinen entered the LCW (lounge chair wood) along with a variety of other pieces into the Museum of modern arts “Organic Furniture Competition” in 1940. Charles and Eero won the competition. However, production of the initially designed chairs was postponed due to the United States entry into WWII.

This interruption proved financially rewarding to Charles Eames. He began making molded plywood splints for the US Military. The splints were modeled after his own leg and allowed him to hone the technique of molding the plywood into complex curves. The LCW was a result of this experience and began its first year of mass production in 2 species, Mahogany and Rosewood, in 1946.

The December 31st, 1999 issue of Time magazine named the Eames LCW Pony Chair the “Design of the Century”. Molded plywood creates soft contours that invite you to relax and stretch your legs out. The low slung stature puts the sitter in a unique position to observe the room around them and have a sense of a larger space above them.

Our LCW Plywood chair reproduction has the good posture of civility and solid form, while feeling as familiar as an old friend, as it may remind you of your chair and desk in elementary school only much more comfortable.

Leather black and white or brown or white “cow hide” covers are available in addition to wood and are a whimsical, practical use of space. The curiously modernist design combined with the Pony Skin “Western style” look will generate discussion and will encourage a relaxed, mellow mood to any gathering.

Charles Eames, an American architect and designer was greatly influenced by the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. Eliel’s son Eero (creator of the Ball Chair) would later become a partner and friend of Charles. In 1941, Charles married Ray Kaiser also an American artist, designer, and filmmaker who, together with her husband Charles, is responsible for many classic, iconic designs of the 20th century.

Their work displayed the new technique of molded plywood products, including the 1945 DCW (Dining Chair Wood) and DCM (Dining Chair Metal with plywood seat) and the plywood Eames Lounge Chair 1956. From the beginning, the Eames furniture has usually been listed as by Charles Eames. In fact in the 1948 and 1952 Herman Miller bound catalogs, only Charles’ name is listed, but it has become clear that Ray was deeply involved and should be considered at minimum an equal partner in bringing the classic furniture pieces to life.
