Le Corbusier Style LC2 Sofa 3 Seat, Cream White Premium Leather

Even in 1928, apartment living in Paris required a well thought out compact furniture design. Le Corbusier recognized this and designed for the need. A noticeable feature of the LC2 is the separate appearance of the additional top seat cushion. Remarkably comfortable and compact, Le Corbusier often referred to the pieces as “cushion baskets.”

The LC2, Kardiel specializes in this series and fully understands the intricacies of the original design. Le Corbusier created the LC2 Petit (or Petite) with the stainless steel frame as a sculptural element. Le Corbusier designs are classics now but did not win awards on efficiency or low product cost. That was never the intent. For example, it would have been economically prudent and much easier to simply cut the corner edges of the large wrap around stainless steel tubes each at a 45 degree angle at front and back of the furniture and then weld the edges together. He made a conscious choice not to cut but to bend the tubes around the corner using heat and gradual pressure. The Kardiel reproduction follows this method exactly. Efficient? No. Artistic? Absolutely. The details are what make the classics. Would Leonardo’s Mona Lisa be the famous portrait it is, if the eyes did not seem to follow the onlooker regardless of position? Beneath the cushions, Le Corbusier could have used a flat wood or cushion platform. It would have been economical but it would not last or provide comfort. The Kardiel reproduction, similar to the original, uses a cross tension spring nylon system to support the cushion basket. Like the original this premium Kardiel reproduction uses Top Grain European Aniline stain protected soft leather. This covers the plump multi density cushions generously filled and formed to the original arch level using Dacron wrapping.

Premium Top Grain Aniline Leather is used on this reproduction. Learn more about the leather difference below

Split Grain Leather. On a very basic level, leather furniture consists of Split grain or Top Grain. Split Grain is the leather type used on mid price reproduction furniture and is sold in the U.S and Canada as 100% Genuine, Italian or European leather. Split Grain is the underside of the hide that has been separated from the surface or “top” of the hide. While genuine leather, Split Grain leather does not have the natural surface grain of the cowhide. A topical layer of insoluble pigment is applied to the surface of split grain leather, which is then stamped or “grain embossed” to imitate the surface appearance of actual Top Grain leather. By law, in the U.K and Australia split grain can no longer be sold as 100% leather as the surface area is not the natural grain but insoluble pigment. 100% will often accompany the description of the leather meaning 100% of the furniture’s surface (back, sides, cushions) are covered in split grain leather.

100% Genuine Top Grain Premium Soft Aniline Leather

Top Grain Aniline European leather. One of Kardiel’s Quality Differences.

This item is upholstered in premium Top Grain Aniline European leather. Top Grain is the actual surface of the cowhide. While no one knows the actual number, a small percentage of furniture sold today is upholstered in Premium Top Grain Aniline leather. Some claim as low as 5%. Aniline dying describes one of the two processes in which color is applied to the leather with the dye penetrating the leather and extending beyond the surface, into the leather itself. For modern furniture requiring a clean aesthetic, Top Grain Aniline Leather is both “liquid vat” (deep penetrating) and surface dyed to achieve the main color selection and to conceal uneven tones and blemishes in the hide. Top grain aniline is the softest leather and naturally breaths well. Because Top Grain refers to the actual surface of the animal hide it presents a natural leather appearance you would expect. While it is true that raw Top Grain Aniline absorbs spills easier, Furniture grade Top Grain leather features a stain resistant treatment making it exceptional for everyday lower maintenance use. Although rare, nothing wears, looks or feels better than premium Aniline Top Grain leather. Over time it patinas and becomes more comfortable versus wearing out.

This item is not a Le Corbusier product made by Cassina. Kardiel has no affiliation with Cassina.

The Le Corbusier sofa set series was originally designed in 1928 for the Maison La Roche house in Paris. The design is the modernist response to the traditional club chair. The LC2 Petit (or Petite) series is the smaller of two versions Le corbusier created.

A striking feature of the LC2 is the externalized metal frame supporting the base, extending as the legs and running the entire length of the piece. Its not just the front of the LC2 that is attractive, the metal frame work means design detail from the sides and back allowing for easy placement even in the middle of a room. When designing in small spaces, the ability to place items in the middle of the room is no small feature. The design is available in a 1, 2 and 3 seat version that share the same overall dimensions with the exception of the length. The Le Corbusier LC2 set is often used in a group of 2 chairs (1 seat version) and a single sofa or love (2 or 3 seat versions).

Le Corbusier born in 1887 was a Swiss architect, designer, urbanist, writer and painter. Le Corb is famous for being one of the pioneers of what now is called Modern architecture or the International style. He began experimenting with his line of Le Corbusier furniture design in 1928. His cousin, Pierre Jeanneret collaborated on many of the Corbusier Furniture designs.

In 1928, Le Corbusier and Perriand began to put the expectations for furniture Le Corbusier into practice. The first results of the collaboration were chrome-plated tubular steel chairs designed for two of his projects, The Maison la Roche in Paris and a pavilion for Barbara and Henry Church. The most famous of these chairs and sofa sets are the now-iconic Le Corbusier LC-2, LC-3 and LC-4. LC-2 & LC-3 are similar in design with the LC-2 being the small version and the LC-3 the larger version. Le Corbusier LC-4 is the famous Chaise Lounge. The LC5 Sofa is a less known but extremely well designed sleek daybed with the back of the sofa folding down flat.
