It’s Cashmere Wool

It’s not just wool, the fabric of this Hans J Wegner Wing Chair reproduction is made of Cashmere Wool. Cashmere Wool is the finest grade of wools. Cashmere sheep produce a double fleece that consists of a fine, soft undercoat. It is comfortable as it breathes naturally and features inherently stain resistant qualities. If you are not getting Cashmere Wool, you are not getting the best.

About Cashmere:

Cashmere wool fiber is obtained from “Cashmere goats.” Historically, fine-haired Cashmere goats have been called Capra hircus laniger, as if they were a subspecies of the domestic goat Capra Hircus. Cashmere goats produce a double fleece that consists of a fine, soft undercoat or under-down of hair mingled with a straighter and much coarser outer coating of hair called Guard Hair. For the fine under-down to be sold and processed further, it must be de-haired. De-hairing is a mechanical process that separates the coarse hairs from the fine hair. After this separating process the resulting premium “cashmere” is ready to be dyed and converted into yarn.

The year of design was 1953. Hans Wegner created the GE 290 Plank Series with a wind swept lineal frame. Similar to the wing chair, the frame of the plank series is pitched backward in angle in such a way that one can imagine the series being produced in a wind tunnel. The look denotes the forward thinking, forward direction Series GE 290 design. In previous designs, Hans had created single pieces. The notable element of the Plank series was the 1, 2 and 3 seat configuration as options.

Hans is no doubt the father of Danish Modern Furniture design. This series shows his desire to incorporate wood as is present in much of the Danish designs with wool upholstery for its practical comfort. This series graduated to design icon status throughout Europe, the U.K and Australia by the mid 1970’s. Its popularity in the U.S is now on the rise, however on a positive note, it is not a design that is known to the masses. Ownership of this series still has the advantage of exclusivity to it as it denotes a deeper understanding of the Mid-Century Designs and their designers.

Hans J. Wegner was born April 2nd 1914 and passed on January 26th, 2007. Hans grew up in southern Denmark and early on made a profession in wood cabinet making. He developed an affinity toward crafting with natural wood. The famous Plank series combines Hans two favorite natural materials, wood and wool.

Later in life, he became part of the Copenhagen Carpenters guild and began attending furniture exhibits. Wegner will likely be remembered for his contributions toward Modern Danish Furniture Design. For Hans, this design would start with wooden chairs in his early years. Later he would use a combination of wood and fabrics in his designs, a good example being the Shell Chair.

Hans Wegner had many notable furniture releases during his career. In 1953 he released the Wegner Plank Sofa Series. This series consists of a 1, 2 and 3 seat configuration. Unmistakably Danish furniture design, the plank series features a solid ash arm, back and seat frame and soft cashmere wool cushions. 1960, he released in limited production the CH445 Hans J Wegner Wing Chair. The wing chair featured a solid wooden frame however it was covered with full upholstery in both leather and fabric. Hans received more than a few awards. In 1951, he took the Lunning prize and Gran Prix of Milan. In 1959, he was awarded Royal Designer by the Royal Society of Arts in London.

He made several of what are now considered his famous quotes with regards his furniture designs. “The good chair is a task one is never completely done with” and “We must take care that everything does not get so dreadfully serious. We must play but we must play seriously” are two of his well known.
