In his 1956 design statement for the Coconut chair, George Nelson said it “was developed to give lounge seating comfort together with great freedom of movement.”
A Smooth fiberglass shell, the single piece foam rubber cushion and a frame handcrafted of 100% polished stainless steel. These ingredients speak to the standard of craftsmanship used in the Kardiel Coconut Chair reproduction. The original concept for the design was to relate the lounge chair to the cut section of a coconut shell. Much like a coffee table book, the design invites conversation. The chair is organic in form yet hardly shocking coming from George Nelson, a man who lived by his own words “Total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything.”
The year 1955 is long gone but now you can own your own exacting reproduction of the original Coconut Chair. This reproduction is made to last. Premium Top Grain Aniline Leather is used on this reproduction. Learn more about the leather difference below.
Split Grain Leather. On a very basic level, leather furniture consists of Split grain or Top Grain. Split Grain is the leather type used on mid price reproduction furniture and is sold in the U.S and Canada as 100% Genuine, Italian or European leather. Split Grain is the underside of the hide that has been separated from the surface or “top” of the hide. While genuine leather, Split Grain leather does not have the natural surface grain of the cowhide. A topical layer of insoluble pigment is applied to the surface of split grain leather, which is then stamped or “grain embossed” to imitate the surface appearance of actual Top Grain leather. By law, in the U.K and Australia split grain can no longer be sold as 100% leather as the surface area is not the natural grain but insoluble pigment. 100% will often accompany the description of the leather meaning 100% of the furniture’s surface (back, sides, cushions) are covered in split grain leather.
Top Grain Aniline European leather. One of Kardiel’s Quality Differences.
This item is upholstered in premium Top Grain Aniline European leather. Top Grain is the actual surface of the cowhide. While no one knows the actual number, a small percentage of furniture sold today is upholstered in Premium Top Grain Aniline leather. Some claim as low as 5%. Aniline dying describes one of the two processes in which color is applied to the leather with the dye penetrating the leather and extending beyond the surface, into the leather itself. For modern furniture requiring a clean aesthetic, Top Grain Aniline Leather is both “liquid vat” (deep penetrating) and surface dyed to achieve the main color selection and to conceal uneven tones and blemishes in the hide. Top grain aniline is the softest leather and naturally breaths well. Because Top Grain refers to the actual surface of the animal hide it presents a natural leather appearance you would expect. While it is true that raw Top Grain Aniline absorbs spills easier, Furniture grade Top Grain leather features a stain resistant treatment making it exceptional for everyday lower maintenance use. Although rare, nothing wears, looks or feels better than premium Aniline Top Grain leather. Over time it patinas and becomes more comfortable versus wearing out.
About the design: George Nelson literally designed the coconut chair after a cross section of a coconut shell. Recognized as one of the founders of mid century modern design, George was known for designing interior furnishing items in the form of elements of nature. His Star Clock and Sunburst Clock are prime examples. The coconut chair is a brilliant example of relating a functional modern lounge chair after the coconut shell. The chair itself was conceptualized in 1955 and the very first chair was handcrafted in 1956. The chair has a flowing hammock feel with shallow sides and inviting curves. The Coconut chair is more than a conversation piece. It is the ideal modern classic lounge chair for relaxing at home, office or lounge setting.
George Nelson, one of the founding fathers of American Modernism was born in 1908. While avoiding a rainstorm, Nelson ducked into the architecture school building to stay dry. It was then that he stumbled across an exhibit called “A Cemetery Gateway”. After, unfolded his interest and progression in the field of architecture. The then chairman of Herman Miller discovered Nelson while reading an article on “The Tomorrow House” in a design rag named “Pencil Points”. A year later George went to work for Herman Miller. One notable accomplishment was his idea to create a cleaner city in design as well as a reduction in pollution be it audio, visual or chemical. The outdoor malls in many suburbs of the U.S are in large part a result of his ambition. Some of his well known Modern Classic Furniture designs are the Nelson Bench also known as slat bench, the Coconut Chair and the Marshmallow Sofa.
