Corona Style Chair & Stool, Caramel Premium Leather

Corona was the chair used by the chiefs of state in Europe during the EU summit in Copenhagen in Dec. 2002. A rare combination of organic expression and technical streamlining. The four upholstered shells give maximum support of the body with overt associations to both spinal column and ribs of the human anatomy. Due to its floating constellation, Corona seems to be almost transparent and effortlessly blends in with the room.

Premium Top Grain Aniline Leather is used on this reproduction. Learn more about the leather difference below.

Split Grain Leather. On a very basic level, leather furniture consists of Split grain or Top Grain. Split Grain is the leather type used on mid price reproduction furniture and is sold in the U.S and Canada as 100% Genuine, Italian or European leather. Split Grain is the underside of the hide that has been separated from the surface or “top” of the hide. While genuine leather, Split Grain leather does not have the natural surface grain of the cowhide. A topical layer of insoluble pigment is applied to the surface of split grain leather, which is then stamped or “grain embossed” to imitate the surface appearance of actual Top Grain leather. By law, in the U.K and Australia split grain can no longer be sold as 100% leather as the surface area is not the natural grain but insoluble pigment. 100% will often accompany the description of the leather meaning 100% of the furniture’s surface (back, sides, cushions) are covered in split grain leather.

Top Grain Aniline European leather. One of Kardiel’s Quality Differences.

This item is upholstered in premium Top Grain Aniline European leather. Top Grain is the actual surface of the cowhide. While no one knows the actual number, a small percentage of furniture sold today is upholstered in Premium Top Grain Aniline leather. Some claim as low as 5%. Aniline dying describes one of the two processes in which color is applied to the leather with the dye penetrating the leather and extending beyond the surface, into the leather itself. For modern furniture requiring a clean aesthetic, Top Grain Aniline Leather is both “liquid vat” (deep penetrating) and surface dyed to achieve the main color selection and to conceal uneven tones and blemishes in the hide. Top grain aniline is the softest leather and naturally breaths well. Because Top Grain refers to the actual surface of the animal hide it presents a natural leather appearance you would expect. While it is true that raw Top Grain Aniline absorbs spills easier, Furniture grade Top Grain leather features a stain resistant treatment making it exceptional for everyday lower maintenance use. Although rare, nothing wears, looks or feels better than premium Aniline Top Grain leather. Over time it patinas and becomes more comfortable versus wearing out.

The Corona Chair was first introduced in 1964 to the mainstream public, but was conceived three years earlier in 1961 and that model was crafted out of solid oak, but the second successful model ‘EJ 605’ was released a year later and it was made out of steel. It was initially clear to everyone that this Danish designer has a lot on his mind, and this design was like nothing they had ever seen before. The Corona Chair received a lot of attention and it also received a lot of acclaim as well.

Volther’s approach to the futuristic, modern, naturalistic phase of design from the late 40s to the early 90s was dead on, as the aim of this chair was incorporate every aspect of these attributes into one solid piece. The second model was decided upon after many trials and experimenting with many various materials, and although this model was made of steel and it resembled its predecessor, it was not the same vibrance that was outputted from both models. The ‘EJ 605’ was efficaciously a lot stronger and firmer by just looking at it, and it represented the way the future might look, with modern materials, and its natural stance to the light and essence of its heavenly name. And on that note, both the elliptical design of the chair and its name were inspired by a time-lapse photograph of a solar eclipse.

The essential design is a rare combination of organic expression and ideals, ergonomics, functionality, and technical streamlining. The presence of the four separate, upholstered, oval shaped shells meeting your back at ideal parts, providing maximum comfort and support to the body and the spinal column, as the chair itself appears to have one of its own running down the back of the chair and joining the four shells together. The shells also seem to represent the way the ribs look and are attached to the spine, embracing the flow and the ultimate design of human anatomy. The support (spine) of the chair and everything else is mad of stainless steel frame with a high lustrous finish, and the upholstery comes in either high grain Italian leather or a wide range of fabrics and colours. The oval shells are heavily padded and made of moulded polyurethane foam, and the legs are made of matt chromed spring steel. And the roundness of the elliptical supports of the backrest comes all the way that can also be provided as armrests as well.

Since the Corona’s chair debut it has become quite the requested piece, and has graced many movie screens, television and even the latest music videos, and it was also the official chair used in the 2002 at the Chiefs of State meeting at the EU summit in Copenhagen. It has become his most famous design to date, and it’s a design that smoothly blends with any décor, and exudes comfort, and it is a true original that is incredibly unique.

Poul M. Volther was a prolific and interestingly insightful designer that saw potential in many things that others could not. He was part of the sculpting of the iconic modernistic generation of design along with other famous designers like Le Corbusier, Arne Jacobsen, Hans J. Wegner, the Eames and Alberto Lievore just to name a few. As an exponent to functionalism he was against fads and aesthetic smartness and he loved the simple manufacture of fine materials.

Poul M. Volther was a trained cabinet-maker and later he graduated from The School of Arts and Crafts. As a teacher at The Danish School of Art and Design he has influenced hundreds of young designers’ sense of craft quality. The Corona chair is without comparison his most famous design. He died in 2001 but will always be remembered for this solitary magnificent piece of pure artistry.
