The Barcelona chair was originally created in 1929. The chair was used by Spanish Royalty at the German Pavilion in Barcelona Spain. Not long after the Barcelona Chair became known as the “chair for kings”. Other names for the chair were Barcelona Armchair and 'Barca Chair. Today it is recognized as an iconic modern classic design. Its stately shape represents the Bauhaus movement. The original chair was upholstered using ivory colored Pigskin. The chair and ottoman makes extensive use of both leather piping and impressed buttons. The design drew inspiration from ancient folding chairs. This can clearly be seen where the frame meets in an x pattern almost looking as if it could fold up in position. The original frame was even designed to bolt together. In fact it was not until 1950 that the frame was redesigned using solid stainless providing a smoother finished look.
