Artichoke Style Lamp, White – 23.6″ Diameter

This reproduction is inspired by the Artichoke Pendant, a light fixture originally designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958. The design centers on a 360-degree glare-free light created by leaves, that resemble an artichoke. The light is directed and reflected upon leaves until it illuminates the entire artichoke.

This Contemporary Chandelier is a highly detailed, hand crafted reproduction of the original Artichoke pendant lamp. The Artichoke Lamp was designed in 1958 by Poul Henningsen who is now recognized as the first “lighting architect.” True to the original, the 23.62” diameter of the lamp consists of 12 arches and 11 rows of leaves. Each row features 6 Hand guided laser cut “leaves”. The first four rows of leaves progressively increase in dimension size. The remaining 7 rows contain the largest leave size and are consistent. The total 66 lucent like “leaves” appear to unfold into the classic “artichoke” form, capturing the light from within and softly dispensing it back into the room. Each leaf is offset diffusing the source of the direct light and providing for an indirect glow of light which emanates from the center of the lamp. No other Chandelier pendant lamp design quite duplicates the pleasing indirect. Now you can own your very own version of the Artichoke that is easily recognized worldwide as the Modern Classic Icon in lighting.

Poul Henningsen’s most famous contribution to society is probably the Artichoke Lamp, a spherical, plant-like form. Also known as the PH Lamp, it was created in 1958 and expressed his enthusiasm for “functionalism” and the “natural living” that he advocated so passionately. Poul’s accomplished goal was the creation of the contemporary organic design of the artichoke lamp, functioning to diffuse the harsh elements of the electric interior hanging lamp. The original design was commissioned for use inside the Restaurant “Langeline Pavalion” which is located in Copenhagen. If you are in Copenhagen and visit the Restaurant, they are still hanging to this day. Another gorgeous case of form meets function. Modern and classic simultaneously, there’s no decorating scheme that this lamp won’t illuminate.
Danish architect Poul Henningsen, known by his initials, ”PH” was obsessed with light. He is the legendary creator of the lighting series carrying his name. He can be said to be the world’s first lighting architect. Poul Henningsen devoted his entire career to investigating the importance of light for our well being. He worked on the theory that the observer should not be subjected to direct glare from the electric light source. Henningsen used a series of layered shades to both spread the light and conceal the light bulb, thus creating a softer more diffused lighting.

Poul Henningsen was once quoted as saying “Future comes by itself, progress does not.” He himself lived by these words, always pushing the envelope in both his visually creative endeavors and in the philosophy behind his writing. Poul was born in 1894 to likewise liberally minded parents; author Agnes Henningsen and satirist Carl Ewaldet. Between 1911 and 1917 Henningsen received training to become an architect, but he never graduated and tried himself as an inventor and painter.
