Mid Century Modern Basculant Sling Chair
The 'Basculant Chair' is based on the 18th Century wooden version which was originally foldable and used on picnics in the Colonial days. The inspired chair is a study in beauty, form and function. Its adjustable back and deep, sloping chair cushion let you choose the perfect angle of comfort. A minimalist frame of stainless steel supports the seat and back, adding elegance and classic lines to the piece.
Reproducing the Modernist Icon
In recreating the Basculant Sling Chair no dimension detail was overlooked. Like the original, this quality reproduction uses materials designed to exceed the structure demands of long term daily use. Materials such as the 3mm thick Stainless steel frame, 3mm thick pure Saddle leather and high strength load bearing seat platform cross straps.
In 1928 the Sling Chair design was conceived by stripping away all preconcieved notions of what an occasional chair should be. Originally designed for an office setting, the clean lines and comfortable timeless appeal ushered its use into residential settings. Remarkably comfortable and ergonomic in design, the chair provides a pitched backwards seating angle and pivot adjusting back that customizes itself to your personal seating form.

Genuine Saddle Leather
The term “Saddle Leather” is derived from the 18th century saddle manufacturing industry. Saddle leather represents a thicker stiffer surface material than the leather that would be used in typical furniture upholstery. Saddle leather is capable of holding its form. Similar to the concept of a drum skin, Saddle leather offers both seating comfort and load bearing qualities when tensioned between two surfaces.
100% 3MM Thick Durable Saddle Leather
Saddle leather derives its name from the the saddle industry where a thicker leather version was needed to create a durable surface for the rugged use of horse saddles. This leather type is ideal for applications where load bearing weight is distributed across the surface. Saddle leather is thicker, often 2-3mm in thickness. Saddle leather is capable of spanning two solid structures and supporting seating weight comfortably for extended periods.
This series is upholstered in premium Top Grain Aniline European leather. This is a significant upgrade in leather options. Top Grain is the actual surface of the cowhide. While no one knows the actual number, a small percentage of furniture sold today is upholstered in Premium Top Grain Aniline leather. Some claim as low as 5%. Aniline dying describes one of the two processes in which color is applied to the leather with the dye penetrating the leather and extending beyond the surface, into the leather itself. For modern furniture requiring a clean aesthetic, Top Grain Aniline Leather is both “liquid vat” (deep penetrating) and surface dyed to achieve the main color selection and to conceal uneven tones and blemishes in the hide. Top grain aniline is the softest leather and naturally breaths well. Because Top Grain refers to the actual surface of the animal hide it presents a natural leather appearance you would expect. While it is true that raw Top Grain Aniline absorbs spills easier, furniture grade Top Grain leather features a stain resistant treatment making it exceptional for everyday lower maintenance use. Although rare, nothing wears, looks or feels better than premium Aniline Top Grain leather. Over time it patinas and becomes more comfortable versus wearing out.
“Split Grain” is the most common leather used on furniture. This reproduction has been upgraded to Top Aniline leather and does not use Split Grain leather. Nonetheless, this paragraph will help explain the difference in quality and price between the leather types. Split Grain is the underside of the hide that has been separated from the surface or “top” of the hide. While defined as actual leather, Split Grain leather does not have the natural surface grain of the top of the cowhide. A topical layer of insoluble pigment is applied to the surface of split grain leather, which is then stamped or “grain embossed” to imitate the surface appearance of actual leather. This topical layer contains the color that the leather will be.
