The Chesterfield origin story is not as definitive as you might think. It is likely closer to reality to call the origin an accepted theory as to its history. The story is likely accurate, at least in its broad base parts. The original deep button tufted Chesterfield design was likely created in the mid 1700’s, probably 1755 or shortly into the 1760’s. Lord Phillip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield in England had the original Chesterfield commissioned for his own royal residence. It is not clear who the original craftsman was nor how much actual input Lord Phillip had versus the actual creator. In other words, it is unclear whether Lord Phillip gave the exact design to the craftsman or gave a general idea of what he envisioned the piece to be. Over time, the design has been reinterpreted in many different ways. Reproductions with respect to the traditional style always will share low tooled wooden feet, deep tufting in the back and arms, a mono height (same height) back and arm frame, and rolled arms.

Going back to the origin of the Chesterfield story, “Mr. Dayrolles” was the godson of Phillip and had come to visit him on his deathbed. Legend has it that just before Lord Phillip Stanhope passed away on March 24th 1773, he ordered his personal butler to give “Mr. Dayrolles” a Chesterfield chair from the palace estate. Mr. Dayrolles carried the Chesterfield Chair home with him that very day. It is further theorized that his likewise aristocratic inner circle became aware of the chair from visitations and were so intrigued by its exceptional design that they commissioned craftsman to create replicas for themselves. Although not well documented, this story seems to be close to likely reality as the Chesterfield soon became the expected piece of furnishing for the elite and aristocratic in both England and its colonies from that time forward.
Regardless of its 18th century beginnings, the Chesterfield series adapts itself to a wide variety of modern interiors. There is no doubt that the Chesterfield is the classic icon of sofa designs. During its extensive history, it has never ceased production and has always held a prominent place in the libraries, dens and living spaces in the homes of aristocrats. As of late, it is making a significant impact on the design world being seen as an intriguing way to introduce juxtaposition, specifically bringing solidity and tradition to modern contemporary rooms.
