The Kardiel reproduction of this mid century modern icon features plump down feather overstuffed cushions you can sink into. An original metal Sinuos no sag "S Coil" suspension system encased in high density foam was selected for the seat platform of Elektra. The back and seat cushion are upholstered in fabric on both sides making them reversible. Adding flair, the stiletto legs are narrower where they meets the floor with the rear legs angled slightly toward the back.
Viewing the images of Elektra from the side and its clear that the styling of Elektra goes beyond the typical square modern design. The curves and low profile design of the arm contribute to the design and comfort of the entire frame. From the base the thin arms actually angle slightly forward as they rise before rolling gently backward and slightly downward until reaching the back. A hand crafted solid kiln dried hardwood frame features metal and dowel joinery methods.
Making the icon
The design originally went into production in 1958. Elektra is thoroughly modern with a mid century period correct elegance. Every detail from the height and width of the stiletto legs, the backward sloping low slung arms and the real wood undercarriage were documented and faithfully reproduced. The front and rear edge of the arms are rounded in true mid century modern style. Noticeable from the side angle images, the back gently angles to cradle the body in a comfortable seated position. The seat cushions are button free and the back cushion has 1 row of 3 buttons. The seat and back cushions are removable. reversible and feature rear zippers.
Whether placed in the center of the room or with its back to the wall, the solid gently curved varnished wood undercarriage adds the element of handcrafted artisan design. The wooden mid century modern flair leg is the perfect option for suspending Elecktra’s frame from the floor. The degree of leg flair angle was carefully measured staying authentic to this original 1950’s design feature. The timeless splayed leg design with the correct degree of outward angle pulls all of Elecktra’s modernism features together capturing the true feeling of the period.
About Tartan Plaid
Tartan is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands. Tartans originated in woven wool, but now they are made in many other materials. The fabric is durable and easy to maintain. The weft is woven in a simple twill, two over—two under the warp, advancing one thread at each pass.
